Black Type target for Willaroon’s Soho Ruby

Willaroon Thoroughbreds were enthusiastically cheering on their homebred last Saturday at Flemington when the in-form Soho Ruby saluted in The Curragh Racecourse Handicap over 1600m to land her fifth win from 20 starts.

Prepared by talented young trainer, Levi Kavanagh, the daughter of Northern Meteor achieved a short-head win over the favourite Top Of The Range, after finishing a solid third at her last start.

Despite only a handful of horses in work at Kavanagh Racing’s Flemington stable he shares with his father Mark, he can certainly get the results on the board.

“I am thrilled that Soho Ruby has turned into such a brilliant performer for Levi. She really started his career off by not only being his first winner but his first city winner.”

The four-year-old mare will now look at heading to Sydney for the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes March 31, before a trip to his hometown Adelaide to run Soho Ruby in the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes.

“She has earned black-type being Group placed in the Frances Tressady Stakes but it would be great for Levi and for her to secure a Group win to further enhance her value as a broodmare.”

Watkins bought the mare Red Rapture mare in foal with Soho Ruby from Vinery, in the year Northern Meteor died, and then sold Soho Ruby for $190,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale to Levi’s father and leading trainer Mark Kavanagh.

And although Soho Ruby has been a career-defining horse for trainer Levi Kavanagh, over the next couple of years, the young trainer will really make his mark.

With an impressive and highly promising group of yearlings assembled out of this year’s Australian and New Zealand yearling sales, the winners are bound to continue.
