Impressive Maiden Win Shows More in Store for Crookhaven

Three year old Crookhaven spearheaded a two state double on Wednesday when he ran out an impressive winner of the TVN Plate at Sandown.

It was the maiden win for the son of Fastnet Rock but he promised there is more in store with an impressive come from behind win over 1600m.

Racing in the Royal Blue and Gold Stars of Pacific Bloodstock Crookhaven settled third last before jockey Michael Rodd sent him around the field, rounding the turn seven deep. He assumed the lead at the 300 and pulled away for a comfortable win over Skyrockets and Benefits.

Crookhaven was purchased by Mark Hoare of Pacific Bloodstock for $90,000 at the 2011 Inglis Classic sale. He is the third foal of the stakes placed Fusaichi Pegasus mare Flying Dansino - a half sister to the talented galloper Zagreb. The Kavanagh stable has enjoyed good success with the progeny of both Fastnet Rock, the sire of star filly Atlantic Jewel, and Fusaichi Pegaus - the sire of stakes winners Tipungwuti and Cats Whisker.

Rounding out the daily double was Gawler winner Shadow Ninja who claimed the feature race on the program the Barossa Cup. It was the second consecutive win for the near black son of Dane Shadow who assumed a front running role and defied all challengers in the straight.

It may have been a quiet Spring, but Kavanagh Racing’s team has been set for the Summer period. With a lot of inexperienced young horses set to race in the next few months the stable is happy with their decision to bypass the Spring and take advantage of the excellent pastures and give their horses a little for time, and the way the horses have developed is testament to the fact they made the right move.
