Atlantic Jewel in fine fettle for Spring

Champion female Atlantic Jewel met the press this afternoon to mark the release of nominations for the big Spring feature races with the Cox Plate firmly on her agenda.

The now five-year-old mare has not raced since beating the older horses in the AJC All Aged Stakes in April 2012 and her eagerly awaited return could be less than a fortnight away.

Three races, the MVRC Cockram Stakes, MRC Memsie Stakes or VRC Lets Elope Stakes have been touted as possible returns but much will depend on the weather and the outcome of a jump out this Friday.

"She's been off the scene for quite a while so she may take a few jump outs to come to hand," said trainer Mark Kavanagh.

"I won't make any plans until we have a good look at her on Friday".

"I can tell you she has not lost any of her talent".

Unbeaten in seven starts Atlantic Jewel's career has been curtailed by injury and the stable are hopeful that the careful rehabilitative program she has undergone can see her make a successful return to the racetrack.

Also on call to meet the press was stable mate and Australian Cup winner Super Cool. He is nominated for both the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate. The son of Fastnet Rock is earmarked to return to racing in the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on August 31.
