Atlantic Jewel regains her sparkle
Stable star Atlantic Jewel showed she had lost none of her lustre with a dazzling display in the Caulfield Stakes on Saturday.
The win was her fourth at Group One level and quickly erased the disappointment of her short head (and only) defeat by It's A Dundeel at the same track three weeks earlier in the Underwood Stakes.
Atlantic Jewel became the first mare since Tristarc, some 28 years previous, to win the Caulfield Stakes, a race rich in history and one with an honour roll that features a seemingly endless list of equine luminaries such as Kingston Town, Bonecrusher, Lonhro, Might and Power, So You Think, Northerly, Gunsynd, Tranquil Star, Bernborough, Hallmark, Lord, Ajax and Wakeful.
Atlantic Jewel will now head to the Cox Plate where she will seek to emulate the feats of Tranquil Star who completed the Caulfield Stakes/Cox Plate double in 1942 - the only mare to do so.
Trainer Mark Kavanagh has enjoyed past success in the Caulfield Stakes with Whobegotyou in 2009 and Maldivian in 2007. Whobegotyou was subsequently sixth in the Cox Plate of the same year and Maldivian won the Cox Plate although a year later in 2008.
