Seradess Remains Unbeaten 

The Mark Kavanagh trained Seradess kicked off Adelaide Cup day with a storming victory in the opening race on the card, the Listed Cinderella Stakes for two-year-old fillies.

The daughter of Astern won on debut at Bendigo at a starting price of $51 (dead-heating with Cloudy) and followed up in no uncertain terms here to make it two out of two.

Jamie Kah, who, ironically, was on Cloudy in the Bendigo race, was content to ride the Seradess off the speed in the early part, but once Kah asked Seradess to quicken in the home straight Seradess unleashed a powerful finish which put her rivals away in the blink of an eye and she remained strong to the line.

“The horse that she dead-heated with on debut had raced in a Group 3 race before that and Levi’s horse Her Empire, who finished third in that race at Bendigo also finished third in a Group 3 at Flemington on Saturday, so we knew the form was franked,” said Mark.

“She is a really nice filly and I think at three we’ll find out how good she is, but she has qualified for some nice races in the spring now. Yes, there are some pretty good two-year-old races coming up, but you don’t get to be a good three-year-old if you go to the well too often as a two-year-old.”

The result provided a happy homecoming for Jamie Kah.

“That was super. It is great to be back,” said Jamie.

“This filly is really smart. She showed a lot of improvement out of her first-up win.

“Obviously, I dead-heated with her that day at Bendigo. I was on James Cummings’ horse (Cloudy).

“She did a lot of work. She got back. I was happy to let the speed go because I knew she had a good turn of foot from the other day. Her turn of foot is her best attribute for sure.

“She is very classy. She is relaxed. She is not a hot filly at all. She settles and the way she ran home and found the line I think she will be winning better races.

“I also think she will go further and that will open up her options too.”

The connections of Seradess also race Rebel Racer and Heroic Chief with Kavanagh Racing. Rebel Racer won his last start at Sandown and Heroic Chief placed second on debut at Werribee on Thursday.  Exciting times ahead for the South Australian based ownership group.
