Super Cool stars in Australian Cup

Star three-year-old Super Cool collected his first Group One title and exceeded a million dollars in earnings on Saturday when victorious in the VRC Australian Cup.

The son of Fastnet Rock tackled the older horses under weight for age conditions for the first time and left no doubt that he is a horse with a serious future with their comprehensive defeat.

Super Cool showed a superior turn of foot in the straight chasing down rival three-year-old Fiveandahalfstar to claim victory by a short head. Tanby was third some four lengths in arrears alongside last year's Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon.

“Each time we’ve put him out he’s got better and better and his two runs this time have been splendid but to get a three-year-old to win at weight-for-age against those guys is tough” said trainer Mark Kavanagh post race.

In the absence of champion Atlantic Jewel Super Cool has emerged from the ruck to claim star status at the Kavanagh stable.

“We’ve had a quiet year last year and we cleaned out a lot of horses that had be replaced and the young horses now are starting to fire up and we’re on our way to getting back.”

It has been widely noted that only two previous winners of the Australian Cup have been three-year-olds - Dulcify and Saintly - placing Super Cool in illustrious company. Whilst any comparison is premature Kavanagh is excited by Super Cool's future prospects.

“He is a very promising horse and we’ve always been pretty excited about his chances.....we’ll nominate him for everything in the spring and let him choose the path that we take him on.”
